The term “monstrous moonshine” was coined by Conway, who, when told by John McKay in the late 1970s that the coefficient of {q} (namely 196884) was precisely the dimension of the Griess algebra (and thus exactly one more than the degree of the smallest faithful complex representation of the Monster group), replied that this was “moonshine” (in the sense of being a crazy or foolish idea).[1] Thus, the term not only refers to the Monster group M; it also refers to the perceived craziness of the intricate relationship between M and the theory of modular functions.

However, “moonshine” is also a slang word for illegally distilled whiskey, and in fact the name may be explained in this light as well.[citation needed] The Monster group was investigated in the 1970s by mathematicians Jean-Pierre Serre, Andrew Ogg and John G. Thompson; they studied the quotient of the hyperbolic plane by subgroups of SL2(R), particularly, the normalizer Γ0(p)+ of Γ0(p) in SL(2,R). They found that the Riemann surface resulting from taking the quotient of the hyperbolic plane by Γ0(p)+ has genus zero if and only if p is 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 41, 47, 59 or 71. When Ogg heard about the Monster group later on, and noticed that these were precisely the prime factors of the size of M, he published a paper offering a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey to anyone who could explain this fact.[2]

Updates…

Busy time of the year for me, relatively speaking. I’ve just completed not 1 but 2 of what I call carrcasses on this here blog, and have debuted both to tiny audiences in the last week. One more is on the way even, a smaller affair of about 1/2 an hour or so. Carrcasses are a very large subject in and of themselves, a lot of which I can’t speak about in this forum. But they’ve certainly kept me occupied since early September, along with fall hiking season and attached F&HE! blog post generation. I need to also edit photos tonight.

Carrcass energy hasn’t been at this level since 2007, I feel. Then along with all this I’ve kept my Second Life VWX Town around through October at least, and probably beyond now.

But the hiking part might slow down considerably, since I threw out my back a bit yesterday. I don’t think I can chance walking around my usual rougher terrain this weekend, despite it being *perfect* weather (darnit!). But I’m rolling with the punches, and still may set up a toy happening around what’s called Heart Lake in flatter territory. If so, the place I set up — on a small, rocky beachy area — seems to be named Myst or Mysten or Mystel, relatable to Secret Garden’s Mistlethwaite. I had Elton John’s “Blue Eyes” playing in my head while exploring Heart Lake day before yesterday, and when I re-stumbled upon this small beachy area (found a number of years ago but then not revisited until now).

What toys to take? I’m thinking small autos and trucks — just let the characters interact with the land. If it comes to be, this will be quite different from Billfork or Lion’s Roar or Falmouth, my most recent such happenings (although perhaps closest in spirit to the latter?). We better bring in Hucka D.

Myst. Somtimes[ spelled]: Mist. (Hucka D. spells out both) Your GNIRPS should be back in action soon.

Take all the toys you need. What do you think occurred there? Is this Sharieland Central?

bb:

It’s important. Heart Lake is important.

Hucka D.:

Sharies descended from Herman’s Mansion [in the Sky — to them] and found their way to Heart Lake and also Head Lake. Some stayed in [Bedrock] close to the mansion, on Head Line. They stayed at the top of *Negative One* Vale. The others moved to the top of *Null* Vale, which naturally acted as a siphon to lower elevations.

bb:

Hmm — meaning that they passed down the Null Vale toward Heart and Head Lakes.

Hucka D.:

Correct. Setting up settlements all along the way, but not as concentrated as [Bedrock].

bb:

Hucka D., we’ve already attached the name [Bedrock] to a Yellow Down location in Green Oz at Wealthy Mtn.

Hucka D.:

Related. But not as old. Head Line’s [Bedrock] is older. The Way came, and the old power gave way — *way* — to the new power. Lisa The Vegetarian took control from the owner still in Herman’s Mansion at the time. An agreement was forged. Handshakes… There was a meeting, several in fact. Herman’s wife Lilly knew of St. Lisa. Lilly…

bb:

Lilly was greatly disturbed by the coming of The Way, which effectively split Herman Park in two.

Hucka D.:

Herman Park was *made* at that point, per Lisa’s plan overseen by Marty.

bb:

And we’ve established that Marty is a variant of McCartney — Paul.

Hucka D.:

The same.

bb:

And their connection comes through a Simpsons episode.

Hucka D.:

Correct[ once more].

bb:

Go ahead…

Hucka D.:

You don’t not yet fully understand that these events actually happened and are as real as you and me talking *here*.

bb:

In Nowhereville (smiles).

[The origin of] Frank Park is still a mystery to me, Hucka.

Hucka D.:

Frank Park is more a mirror of Herman, as Frankenstein parodies Herman Munster.

bb:

I think that’s actually the opposite[ thing going on here].

Hucka D.:

What of Herman himself? He had passed away long before the coming of The Way.

Hucka D.:

Doesn’t [really] matter. He was in on the agreement. He had to be. The original purpose of the mansion and the grounds was as a functional estate. This yielded to recreational purposes, and finally a deep, mythological story of considerable…

bb:

Depth?

Hucka D.:

You. And Lisa. And Marty. And Herman and Lilly. And… someone else.

bb:

Hucka D.:

Wallace, yes.

bb:

So getting back to the formation of Herman Park, Lisa set up Head, Heart, Hand, Health. With Health spinning the opposite way because it was on the opposite side of The Way from all the others.

Hucka D.:

All this was set up *at once*, as it were. As it is. As it will be and is and was. WIS.

bb:

I’m having trouble quite grasping that.

Hucka D.:

Because you are limited to time-space. Even in death you do not escape this cloistering gravity.

bb:

So I guess Herman and Lilly had trouble with[ the concept] as well.

Hucka D.:

They understood [the concept of] Munster MASHup. (Hucka D. clarifies that spelling, once more)
