Anson Anton

“Well? How’d it go?” asked Jim the Pirate Bartender about Marion’s exploration of Anson. He was nosey that way. Regular customers usually liked it. Strangers sometimes put off. Like Marion Harding. But he relented, wanting to abate rumors while telling the real, *checkable* facts as much as possible.

“Nothing much there except a hull,” he tested. “No autos within now for certain.”

“We *know* that, Mr. Hardware,” Jim said, speaking for the bar collective he felt he presently represented.

“Harding,” Marion corrected about his name.

“What about Anton? What’s he look like these days? Use to come in here you know. Alternated between a bloody bucket of nails and a naily bucket of blood. Rough drinks both. Usually dove back into the sea pretty wasted. Surprised he didn’t actually drown he was so sloshed.”

“You know that’s impossible,” Marion corrected again. “You know we can all breathe under the water. Above the atmosphere, under the water. Survive fire and flood — although there is that rumor about a volcano on the Old Continent where avatars could actually perish.”

“But look at your friend Stinky Brinkman you spoke about earlier. Riddled with bullet holes. You said you were there at the funeral and another gunfight erupted, with three more dead. Then at *their* funerals nine more dead. What was the total at the end?”

“138,” replies Marion in a level tone. “138 avatars killed so far. Chain reaction, yeah.” He shook his head, thinking about Stinky more than any of the others. “But they aren’t really dead, see. The *core* remains to rise another day. Actually,” he then reconsidered, “there is another way to truly die. You can deactivate yourself — obliterate the core. I’ve been told it’s possible but I’ve never known anyone to actually do it. The problem might be: when you deactivate yourself that way you rub yourself out of existence, so no one remembers anything about you, past or present. It’s as if you never existed in the first place. Working theory mind you.” He took another sip of his Brewmeister’s Quarterly, still being careful not to drink too much. Because that’s when he gets in trouble with the revealing.

“Well I never,” Jim replied, wanting to get back to Anton. He wiped the counter in front of him a bit and collected his thoughts again. “I’ve heard he’s only a beard these days. Anton, I mean.”

Close, Marion thinks. But then utters: “I didn’t see him. No autos, no Anton.”

“Impossible,” returns Jim. “There’s a green dot on the map up there. It’s usually there. It’s gotta be Anton. We’ve had ships pass over the wreck and examined their NAR (Nearby Avatars Radar). Anton: usually the culprit. In fact — let me check my own map right now (Jim’s face went blank for a moment) — well he’s not there now, but *usually* is. Sometimes, anyway.

A cyberwoman walks into the bar and settles into a stool two down from Marion, paper airplanes whirling ’round and ’round her head. Spy? he considers. Jim keeps talking about Anton. Marion wishes he would really shut his yapper now.

“Maybe he’s totally invisible. He use to be whole, like when he came in here. But then there were reports of just a beard and a coat, just a hat and some pants. Maybe he really is gone, man. Dead even.”

“Is this Anton a boy of about 10 years old,” Cyberpaperdoll then inserted.

“Um, no,” Jim answered.

“Well, never mind, then. Paper plane cocktail if you will.”

What Marion actually saw:

Shoes buried in the sand — uncovered. And the left one holding something small and green and almost priceless he soon found out. About $500,000 lindens worth of almost priceless. Enough to leave Second Lyfe altogether if he wished. But, truth be told, he only wanted to get back to that ice fishing shack over in Horizons-Spica. He dreamed about it almost every night.

Zappa groupie?

“I *know* this person, Biker Mann,” Cyberpaperdoll stated while zooming into a snapshot from the last Sunklands post. “This Anorexia or Annie. It’s Baker’s friend! From the old synching board. Raynbowladirubislyppers.”

“Interesting,” he replied nonchalantly while continuing to stare out the window toward Home Orange and the comings and goings of Jacob I. and Broken Heart. But Biker isn’t my name any longer, Roger Pine Ridge thought to himself. You don’t know who *I* am.

coincidence

“I want to show you something,” Cyberpaperdoll said to Biker Mann while they were eating downstairs later on. Friendly neighbor Tammy Whatammy joined them in a meal of broiled salmon, banana bread, and almond salad. The leftovers were later fed to her dog Poo.

Cyberpaperdoll retrieved the magnetic board with her new arrangement of flat alphabet blocks from underneath her chair and laid it in the center of the table. “If you extend the letters beyond the 5×5 on the right side, see, like the flow indicates, you get an 8×5, just like the forest grid over there.” She nods toward the south window facing the demon filled woods. “I’ve figured out the color arrangement too, as you can tell. It’s TILE again. Baker Blinker was in the Temple of TILE today, looking for things to eliminate to make room for more apartment prims.”

“She never came out,” grunted Biker Mann, woofing down a large chuck of salmon.

“Who?” asked his girlfriend. Tammy Whatammy peered around for her chihuahua. She wanted to sneak him a special piece of salmon while the other two were engrossed in their mystery project.

“The female Baker,” Biker clarified. “She never came out of the orange door. “Jacob I. did, but she never did. I think she went to the Other Side. At least for a spell.”

“Maybe that’s related,” Cyberpaperdoll opined with a pause, then returned her attention to the board. “But what is missing here, Biker? What’s the letter we don’t see here even with this extension?”

Biker looked the jumble of letters over but couldn’t tell. He wasn’t quite as bright as his girfriend. He operated as the heavy of the duo. “Dunno.” He speared another salmon piece with his fork and gobbled it up.

“The *I,*” she spoke. “Of all the letters, it’s the ‘I’ that’s missing.”

“Fantastic,” an unimpressed Biker grumbled while picking up his empty plate and heading for the stove again. “You still good over there Tammy?”

Tammy quickly gave the fish eye to Poo underneath the table and then raised her head. “Good,” she nodded while smiling agreeably.

two parter

Baker Blinker ran across Jacob I. in front of Home Orange, the site of Furry Karl’s old bar. Jacob I. immediately thought it was fate. “Should we enter?” he asked Baker Blinker, who had just come down Centre Street after examining the Temple of TILE for more prim removal possibilities. “I want to show you something within.”

“Sure.”

“The Portal,” Jacob I. said after they walked inside and stared at the back door in the opposite corner of the building from the same colored front.

“Yes I know.” Baker Blinker said matter of factly. She was somewhat more skeptical than Baker Bloch about the authenticity of Jacob and his I., er, eye. She was keen to spot any charlatan vibes coming from the Collagesity newcomer.

“If you go through it, you won’t be in the same village as before. This has happened previously. This is a power leakage we must stop before proceeding. We need to establish *something* here. A block.”

“Baker?” Baker Blinker joked. She smiled at Jacob.

“Maybe his father again,” the former lawnmower spoke, still serious. “Space Ghost. Can we summon him?”

—–

“They just passed through the orange side of the building,” the observing Biker Mann croaked. “Must be a phantom (prim).”

“Obviously,” states Cyberpaperdoll to her rough-and-tumble boyfriend from the couch of their apartment. As per usual when she was thinking, paper airplanes whirled around and around her head.

“Aren’t you curious what they’re up to?”

She continued to stare straight ahead. “Nah. It’s the owner of the town. Baker Blinker. Just making the rounds.”

“And that weird-o Jacob. You’ve heard I suppose.”

“About the eye?” Cyberpaperdoll replied. “Yeah I’ve heard. You can actually see a bit of it poking below his straw hat. It’s not very well hidden… if you know where to look.”

“And they say he comes from a hidden village as well,” continued Biker, still clutching his pistol behind his back. “Maybe if we know where to look we can find that too.”

“That’s why we’re here,” returned Cyberpaperdoll in a level voice. “To find the boy and bring him home.”

mice

Cyberpaperdoll returned to her home of 5 1/2 years across the Atoll Sea and pondered if Biker Mann and she had any kind of real future together.

Oh. Speaking of swings and futures…

“Tommy Brade was always your mother’s favorite, Paul. But you’re not Paul. You’re Even Whiter Walt. Whiter than Caucasian Tommy Brade. You burn in moonlight. You dance to Guy Lombardo. If you were any whiter, you’d turn into a pillar of salt. Believe me, boy, Mary is not the boy for you. She’s not even a boy.”

“I love her,” counters fellow swinger and estranged nephew Paul. “She’s kind to animals. She sings like a butterfly. I’m hanging my future on her. I’m not going back (to the woods).”

“Sure you are. You’re already there. *They* have spies all around. The Invisibles.”

“I don’t know who those people are, Uncle Babyface,” his nephew reiterates. “All I know is that I’m happy here in Be Happy.”

“Hana Lei,” clarifies Mr. Babyface.

“Sure,” states Paul. “There’s *so* much pot here, uncle. Did I show you the biggest one? Just behind us.” He points to his back right.

Indeed it was a big pot. Three stoned little Story Room wannabes staggered around in a bit of snow in front of the whopper. They could be there for months. Years!

So it is with Peter, Paul and Mary in Hana Lei, Mr. Babyface realizes. Months. Years. He returns to Collagesity and drinks with a broken heart at Audrey’s until the clock strikes one and there is no sun.

New Lynne

It was the most expensive apartment in town, but Biker Mann loved it because of the clear view down Old Cannon Road into the woods. Cyberpaperdoll too!

Because demons were coming.
