The Bar at the End of Time

“We can speak freely here, Pat. Away from the users. Go ahead.”

“Well. Like I said, I knew he came in from the high desert because he was all gritty and grimy and stuff.”

“Where else would he come from?” asked Zoidboro intelligently.

Patrick Starkey adjusted his cap. “Nowhere, I suppose. And he was different looking. Not as mutanty.” Patrick stared at Zoidboro and the various projections issuing from his head. “No offense, man.”

“None taken.” Zoidboro decided to direct the conversation toward the heart of the matter. “Tell me how Rosehaven came up?”

“They’re down there, Axis.”

“We have them now.”

all the stops

April Mae Flowers had always been clamped onto husband Septimius Felton during life. But death freed her. Was she the same as Misty? Sorry to be asking so many questions, but we are at the beginning of something new. Different. Notice the narrow boat again in the background of this post’s first picture? That kind of thing. But quickly masked over by snow and death and gloom. Back to AMF…

centre again

“So will you tell me where the mountain treasure is *now*?”

“Well… it’s not here, that’s for sure. Central forest — in that central park — may seem pretty from a small distance, but up close: no maintenance plan. Terrain doesn’t meet the roots. It won’t live.”

Axis was becoming impatient again. “Then *where*?” He quickly backtracked his emotional outburst. “Please. I-I’ve been waiting so long now.”

Absinthe Fairy finished up Sibelius’ “5 Pieces for Piano” with a flourish. She lifted her hands from the keyboard, caught her breath a bit. “Okay, *now* I can concentrate.” She paused thoughtfully. “What were we talking about, then?”

Later, at 128/128 in the small wood:

“He fell for it, Dixon.”

Out of Gaston

“Original form, eh?”

“*Ghost form, yeah,” spoke Bracket. “I died quite a long time ago now.”

Treelor contemplated this. “I can barely remember my original form. Lost — but I remember where I was born. A place called Outlander.” She paused. “Outlander? Something Outside. Outlands? Anyway, it was very green and quite pretty. A valley in the middle of it all. That’s where I came from.”

“Corsica for me. Bracket Islands. Named after me. I was king.”

Treelor continued rocking. “Did you have a queen?”

Bracket Ghost recalled something about a hill. Fivepenny. “I believe so,” he answered after the memory. “But she was underwater.” He remembered something else. “Green. Half woman half fish. Merwoman I suppose. That’s who I was married to. And she… could play a mean game of crocket.”

“Cricket?” Treelor attempted to clarify. “Do you mean the game of cricket?”

“Croquet,” Bracket then corrected himself.” More memories. “Had a mansion.”

“Hmph.”

They rocked for about a half minute in silence, which Treelor then broke. “I suppose we should get somewhere tonight. Gaston is a logical choice. VW and all. Abbey Road and such.”

“Suppose. Awfully laggy there. We may not make it out, hehe.”

“We’ll have to take that chance.”

Bracket checked his landmarks. “Blue house okay?”

“Sure.”

—–

“Maybe we should start here by washing some dishes.”

“Right. Clean up. You better change over. No aliens. Remember?”

—–

“Where’d she go?”

“Crappy damn place.”

complex

We do not pretend to know what goes on inside the red curtains.

Nor the pink cube.

Kevin (“Fire”) and General Hooker (“Smoke”) lounge outside The Mermaid, waiting for Axis and Ruby to exit.

In the background: Vilania’s Safe Hub once more.

Last clients of the day (bi-weekly meetings, pheh, both think).

Afterwards: Talking about Philip Strevor’s new conditions while re-donning seasonal appearances at Holiday Flats in the midst of it all.

Suddenly, down by the bay:

Further

“I must concur with Lieutenant Spocari, Captain,” pleads 1st Science Officer Dr. I.C. Yourinsides. “All data I’m recieving states that New Eden will be crushed inside the black hole. We must reverse, full speed!”

Tropp stays calm in his chair. “Call me crazy confident, guys, but I think we can do it. One day — Spocari, I.C. — you or someone else of your ilk might be in charge. But not now, not today. This is my decision to make.”

“For-WARD!”

Gulf 02

I suppose Tropp’s true home will always be New Eden, where he has the most control. However, he always seems to be running for his life from something there.

This part looks like Mars — it isn’t Mars.

spirals

“Jeez I haven’t been here in quite a while, Tin Tin, er, Axis. 1/2 a year? Maybe more.”

Axis, who was a dog now, couldn’t answer, but kept indicating spots of significance from before with his sniffing nose.

“That gun is *never* going to stop firing at me. The only way I can stay here… with you… is to keep sitting on stuff. This blue inner tube I always loved, for instance.”

And then, let’s see…

“She can’t return to that moment, on that bench. Pain. She’ll die over and over again.”

“One more try, Albert.”

—–

“See her leg? This must be where she was made, Alex.”

“The guns are silent now.”

—–

“Look. There she is again (!)”

Gaston

“This use to be Chroma’s house, you know.”

“Don’t say.”

“Greg, that is. Ogden. Not the odious Oden fellow.”

“Green, yeah.” She pretend spits on the floor beside the couch. “Disgusting. Red, yellow and blue’s where it’s at.”

“‘Hidden Vilage.'”

Another

A confused, naked Santa walks into a bar in Hogadon, telling the bartender a joke beginning, “What’s white and doesn’t swim?” He then does something totally inappropriate which bars him from the property altogether.

—–

“Santas. All over the place. Either getting killed or driven stark raving mad. Hogadon Santy is the last example, body saved but the mind may never return. Useless for Christmas, you see.” He wraps himself tightly in his chair. “I could be next, Fairy Ruby. Sorry: Mrs. Claus.”

“Nah. We’re back on The Straight now. Seven never happened.” Fairy Ruby Mrs. Claus realized she was being rude. “Oh… do you want a tart? They’re cherry.” Then she remembered the appointment. Already 1 day late. Casey One Hole will be in a bad mood. Which is not a good thing. Atall.

—–

Santa-Axis suddenly found himself alone again, pondering on his ultimate fate. Perhaps another visit to the Vilania Safe Hub next door with all its harmless madness will perk him up. Make him jolly once more.
