Lineside

—–

“They’ll really and truly send you up the river for this one if you don’t cooperate, Duncan. Pin the murders on you one by one. Go down the list, create justifications. Is that what you really want?”

“Of course not. I didn’t kill Ruby!”

“Keep it down, keep it down,” he implored in his cool, grunge voice. “That one we can remake through the leg. Legs are like 11, but, taken apart, 1 apiece. Cloning abilities. But the 12th? Gone.”

“Indigo. Again…!”

“I know — pipe it down. You didn’t do it. Well… that’s the price you pay for being a member of that silly Pot-D. People can use you against your will. You wake up in jail, you wake up in a mortuary, you wake up on a beach, you wake up inside a whale’s mouth. No rhyme nor reason for it. But now there’s a reason. And that’s what *we’re* here for. Pan-Z. Horizontal and vertical are the only directions that will counter diagonal. The Straight is a subsection of The Cross. This is where they meet: this tree lined lane and then the island just beyond. It’s the Mason-Dixon Line all over again. Are you ready to cross into Dixie?”

Duncan glanced over through the cracked rear window of the bus stop. “I do like tree lined roads, granted.”

“Good. Then it’s settled. When you see me again, I won’t look like this.” Then he was gone; winked out.

Duncan thought back to the terrible, horrible revelations Colonel Flagstaff just spoke about on the border of Harrietsville and Arkendale — where The Straight and The Cross supposedly link energies with each other. He could be the 13th. He could be pinned for it all. He could be in the pen forever and ever. He must sign the new contract with a blood filled pen or else: pencil him gone as well.

Laffoon 02

“Volcano island, Indigo. That must be Zebrasil.” Ruby paused. “Or is it Ichelus? Anyway, there’s also these 10 women whose disappearance is associated with 2 more sims: Sylvata and, let’s see, Ribeata. According to this ‘Mole Times’ front page article here at least. So we’ve already found stuff.”

“OMG.” First of many. Ruby doesn’t like spiders. Or tentacles.

“Interesting. But what does it mean?” (exploding washer)

“At least it warmed up the place,” groused Indigo. “For a split second.” She shivers again.

—–

End of Laffoon here, Indigo. And please keep up if you will.”

—–

“More passages to the side before the crossover, though.”

“I’m here,” declares Indigo.

Ruby stares at the southward tableau. “Oil leak. Oil well… ink well. Ink leak. Dimensional rift? Let’s go see.”

—–

“UUGH, Indigo. Giant pink frog!”

“I might throw up, Ruby. That stench!”

“And more lockers. Let’s just throw them all open at once this time.”

Indigo moves toward the wall and vomits.

—–

“Sorry about that, Indigo. The santa hat may indicate recent activity, since this is Christmas season. That’s all I’ve got here.”

“Let’s get out of here, then.”

Their attention shifts northward. They walk to the other end of the corridor. Indigo immediately felt better after leaving behind the frog.

—–

“OMG, Ruby. A club. *Casey’s* club.”

“You put that there,” Ruby accused.

“I put that there,” quickly admits Indigo.

“Stop doing that. This is serious.”

“Okay.” Indigo puts on her best “serious” face, making Ruby sigh and shake her head. “*Anyway* we’re moving out of Laffoon again now.” She boldly strides forward through the danger sign…

“More lockers.”

“Big surprise,” asserts Indigo, thinking of some other joke item she could rez.

“A *dead* parrot this time.”

“Another jack pumpkin head and another santa hat (not pictured)… combo of two holidays that don’t mesh well together — I should know. Being Mrs. Claus and all.”

“You are?”

“Yes.”

“Ahh. *Finally* Indigo. The mystery is starting to come into focus. Serial killer! Bible must equal code, as in a code to crack. We’ll take these 2 items with us back to Collagesity.”

Then Ruby spots something else: a noxious looking puddle. Leaking from the other side.

“Ummm… *In*digo…”

“O-M-G.” They should have never left the laughs and guffaws of Laffoon.

Laffoon 01

“So here we are finally, Indigo. Laffoon. Washing machines…

… and passageways.”

“Rest up, bestest friend of mine. Because we’ve got a big night ahead of us.”

“See what I mean?”

“I’m not looking at that.”

complex

We do not pretend to know what goes on inside the red curtains.

Nor the pink cube.

Kevin (“Fire”) and General Hooker (“Smoke”) lounge outside The Mermaid, waiting for Axis and Ruby to exit.

In the background: Vilania’s Safe Hub once more.

Last clients of the day (bi-weekly meetings, pheh, both think).

Afterwards: Talking about Philip Strevor’s new conditions while re-donning seasonal appearances at Holiday Flats in the midst of it all.

Suddenly, down by the bay:

spirals

“Jeez I haven’t been here in quite a while, Tin Tin, er, Axis. 1/2 a year? Maybe more.”

Axis, who was a dog now, couldn’t answer, but kept indicating spots of significance from before with his sniffing nose.

“That gun is *never* going to stop firing at me. The only way I can stay here… with you… is to keep sitting on stuff. This blue inner tube I always loved, for instance.”

And then, let’s see…

“She can’t return to that moment, on that bench. Pain. She’ll die over and over again.”

“One more try, Albert.”

—–

“See her leg? This must be where she was made, Alex.”

“The guns are silent now.”

—–

“Look. There she is again (!)”

Another

A confused, naked Santa walks into a bar in Hogadon, telling the bartender a joke beginning, “What’s white and doesn’t swim?” He then does something totally inappropriate which bars him from the property altogether.

—–

“Santas. All over the place. Either getting killed or driven stark raving mad. Hogadon Santy is the last example, body saved but the mind may never return. Useless for Christmas, you see.” He wraps himself tightly in his chair. “I could be next, Fairy Ruby. Sorry: Mrs. Claus.”

“Nah. We’re back on The Straight now. Seven never happened.” Fairy Ruby Mrs. Claus realized she was being rude. “Oh… do you want a tart? They’re cherry.” Then she remembered the appointment. Already 1 day late. Casey One Hole will be in a bad mood. Which is not a good thing. Atall.

—–

Santa-Axis suddenly found himself alone again, pondering on his ultimate fate. Perhaps another visit to the Vilania Safe Hub next door with all its harmless madness will perk him up. Make him jolly once more.

Perspective

“Another one, Woody. The killings are increasing again!”

“I blame it on those goll darn cottages, Snowmanster, three in number. Probably four at this point — I haven’t checked. My key hasn’t checked either.”

Snowmanster turns to the large, wooden toy. “Woody. You *are* the key!”

Merely through this statement, Woody then realized they were on the precipice of the fourth, even if it hadn’t actually been created yet. More bad news for the day; seems Core-Alena, Purden, and all of Snowlands are really, truly doomed.

—–

“Where are they, Santa-Axis? We specified 2:01 for a meeting.”

“Says here in the journal that they’ve found a dead Santa in the gorge over yonder. Probably within shouting distance, then.” Santa-Axis turns in the appropriate direction. “Woody! Woooo-dyyyyy!”

The snow fell harder as darkness increased.

green, green hills

Chip Westerhouse was the first guard posted at the newly built and still unoccupied women’s addition to the Chebi State Military Prison bordering Linden protected Xilted. His assignment required he not move from his post…

… but he did have this great view to contemplate while standing still for so long.

Supergal Flo looked on from afar, wondering how many alternate realities she’d have to manipulate in order to stay out of that hideous place for any length of time.

Super Ruby

“I’ve decided I like this role, Axis, and will stay a while here in Middletown with Mr. Babyface and his two goons.”

Half-Axis considered. “You’re not getting back *together* with…”

“Of course not,” Flo cut off. “Banish that from your mind, love. I’m with you now. At least until Xmas. But you’re a changer too. Better go dance up in New Eden to get back to proper form. In fact, I’ll go with you. I need a little break from Cartoon Town.”

—–

She yelled over the music (The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me”) while dancing. “Ahh, this is the life.” She spun around again, then spoke directly over while facing him: “Cross your fingers (she crosses her own fingers here) — I find that treasure before you-know-who gets to it.”

He nodded and continued his frantic gyrations, but the Half-Tropp part remained in place. This was not the right core.
