zilch

George liked it here on the peninsula Duncan assigned him to keep an eye on. This meant Core-Alena in whatever shape she happened to be in at the time. This included The Between, a slither of land representing a neutral point between Virtual and Reality. This meant, well, anything else in and around the peninsula. Just keep your eyes peeled, requested Duncan.

And something had happened tonight, George then realized, peering around. The Seven Crate was gone from its former position behind the Magenta Girls’ beach house.

First the VEN off the boat moored just offshore several days ago, now the SeVEN crate itself. Better get this information back to Duncan as soon as possible, George considered. Maybe… right now?

—–

“I *told* you not to come here, George.”

“I’m properly disguised — in costume.”

“Nevertheless. You’re still a boy of 13 at heart. This is an adult portal.”

George glanced over at the center of it all again. “Milk. And cookies.” He pointed. “Funny.”

“Stop looking over there. You don’t know *what* will show up. Just stare straight ahead.”

“Okay.”

“Tell you what, let’s just get out of here.”

“But I just arrived,” protested George. “Ohhh.”

“Let’s go back to the apartment.” And so they did.

—–

“Okay, I feel a lot more comfortable now with you being here. So… start at the beginning. When did you find the crate missing? After the boat name changed, I know. But just go through the events of the day leading up to it.”

So George unfurled the events of the day leading up to the discovery. Core-Alena and he had had breakfast together at the beach house. “English muffins, ummm,” George remembered. “Core-Alena is a good cook, especially for a tree.”

“That’s a racist and bigoted response,” reprimanded Duncan. “Trees are no different than people. There’s trees that are good with cooking, good with music, good with science. Just like people.” Duncan stared an apology out of his young ward.

“Sorry.”

“That’s okay. Now continue.”

“Well, we finished breakfast, and then I helped with the dishes and we sat around and chatted. Core-Alena — well, you know how she is. Always complaining.”

“Watch it,” warned Duncan.

“Alright.” George nodded here. “But she started on… talking about how she got killed again.”

Duncan paused with this, turned and appeared to look out the window toward the great Hotel Chelsea (the center of it all *here*) while actually deep in thought. “I see.”

“She mentioned you.”

“Of course she did.”

“And how she’s not happy being where she is now. Mobile. That’s the problem,” the boy guesses.

“Yeah,” admits Duncan, turning back around. “That’s the problem, George.” He shuffles his feet a bit, wrings his hands nervously. “A conundrum even.”

George pauses in turn. “She needs to go back into the ground. Doesn’t she?”

Green Squirrel sat patiently on his tiled roof, biding his time and waiting for another part time assignment at Diagonal Alley (etc.) just beyond the hills over there where his wife Huma was currently exploring. What more was there to do?

Greentop, she thought from afar, looking at the one their house was wedged into the side of. I’ll explore that peak next.

all a board

“If you get confused or lost, Campbell, we’ll go ahead and design this as a place you can come to achieve clarity. Now I’ll go ahead and sit beside you since I’m already here. I’m Bracket Jupiter.”

“Hi Bracket,” speaks Campbell O’Pine cordially. “Nice to greet you.”

“So logically that places Spongeberg beside you on the other side. Spongeberg is currently playing the role of your Mmmmmm cousin Grassy Noll. Remember to call him Grass as much as possible. Last seen: getting stoned with Wheeler who is now The Bill. We’ll get to her in a minute. So we’ll seat Grassy who is Spongeberg beside you, since you’re kind of partners. Grassy, can you change into your base character just so Campbell will know what it looks like.”

“Sure.” He changes.

“And I’ll do the same.”

“So here we are,” Bracket says. “Let’s spread it out a little further. Beside me would be Wheeler we spoke about before. She plays a variety of characters but we’ll place her here in the base or core form again. And then beside Spongeberg we have Karoz Blogger — we’re getting into the older souls now of the blog, Campbell.”

“Okay. Hi Wheeler. Hi Karoz.”

Jointly: “Hello.”

“And then beside them we have The Bakers: Baker Bloch next to Wheeler over there, and then Baker Blinker sitting beside Karoz Blogger. Baker Blinker and Karoz are married — you guys are married still?”

“Yes,” they answer in unison. No stares were directed toward Wheeler.

“Baker Blinker and Baker Bloch,” Bracket continues, “are the owners of Collagesity. We’ll visit there soon for further orientation. But for now you must remain in Nascera. *Don’t* go back to New Island. Don’t get lost again.”

“Alright.” But both knew he would.

“And then to round out the circle we have resident blog spirit Hucka Doobie sitting directly opposite you. This is her classic bee form, but she’s refined it a bit now. Would you like to show us, Hucka?”

“Not right now,” the bee person requests.

“Since Hucka most understands among us about getting lost, she’s going to take you under her wing, Campbell.” Awkward pause here, then Bracket realizes his mistake. “Aww, I subconsciously made a bee joke. I’m sorry, Hucka. I know you’ve changed.”

“I have.”

“Are you sure you wouldn’t like to show us how much you’ve changed now? Just for more orientation. It’s important Campbell here knows.”

“Very well.”

“And I can hide my antennae under my hair if needed,” she furthers.

monochrome

“Well, Wheeler. What’s next for you… us?”

“Call me Kidd here. Billy Jean Kidd. Chroma who is Jimmy has fused with Wheeler and The Musician. The great 3-n-1. Norris.”

“Norris?” the great vampire Pitch Darkly questions. He did not know this name. “Do you mean Morris?”

“I do not,” replies The Kidd firmly, sitting forward with hands on knees now. She stares toward him.

Pitch decides to enter mouseview to get a better look at her.

Such an interesting simulation. Simulacrum. He takes up the thread again. “So, who is this Norris, then?”

“You know. 3-n-1,” she states once more.

“Humm, Sandusky,” Pitch says, nodding. Nodding off, that is.

—–

Blackness again.

Then falling. He recalls a brief glimpse of a large, many windowed building.

Something was lost. Not just eyesight. Earsight; speechsight. He falls and falls, then lands, upright, in the midst of animals.

Solid water. He thinks: ark. But then intuitively realizes this is more simulation and there is a door out of what is actually a small globe. Like a door from Earth to Heaven. He thinks of “The Truman Show” and going beyond “The Wall”. True man.

He finds the door in a logical seam, and faces a different, greener water. Atoll style.

He makes his way to a distant shore via an inflatable mattress.

On the beach, he looks back at the globe with the animals within, but knows the animals cannot see him. He thinks to check the owner of the globe, the inflatable mattress, the water itself and the beach and the rocks. All belong to The Kidd again. He is in her realm, he realizes.

—–

Pitch wakes up. A brief nap, but meaningful. Billy Jean Kidd is still staring at him, wide awake all the time.

“I have removed your cardboard eyes and given you back your sights, all 3 of ’em. All I do for this is to ask a small favor. Only one. Find Norris the Father. Look in Beaver City, Nebraska. Find him and tell him that the time has come to firewalk between Republicans and Democrats. He’ll understand. He’ll come here, then. I know you can pull this off. Else: darkness again. You have all the resources of this island at your disposal. And other entities will be dropping by to help.

“But…” he implores.

“Mary?” Billy Jean Kidd guesses correctly about what is foremost in his mind. “Yes. Her too.” Mary manifests beside The Kidd. Pitch Darkly wonders if she’s grown taller since they last met about a week back.

“One chance out between two words,” she chants.

“Worlds,” Billy Jean Kidd corrects. “You meant worlds there.” Mary turns toward her but doesn’t respond. Pitch blows out air in resignation before shutting his eyes and falling asleep again.

going world?

“Rehearsals were already suppose to start, Nancy. We were gonna be stars. That globe would obviously hafta go.”

“I guess we’ll just have to be each other’s star, then.”

“My thoughts exactly. Let’s go get some cake.”

—–

“It’s a very patriotic town, Bettie. But what is this Us of A?”

“It’s a place our user might want to get away from soon. War is brewing. Two little bitty people commanding militaries with their tiny gestures. We’re safe down here. As long as the infrastructure remains.”

She glared over at him again, he with his own piece of delicious cake. It was a small town. Not a lot of restaurants to choose from, for example. They’d keep running into each other. One day they might be friends. But not today. Too much real world mirroring.
