Silent (Center of Universe)

She didn’t know how she got here. She remembers being nude on an island and being rescued. The rescuer had said she’d gone “native” and that it was a good thing he stumbled upon her because she was almost sunburned to death. She said to him she thought she was on Mars, on the only pocket of water on the planet, but just big enough that she couldn’t see the edge from her position on an island within. She saw other islands as well, which to the rescuer she described as planets. He pointed out that didn’t make any sense, and that they were in an ocean, the North Sea of Nautilus to be specific, and that he had found her rocket ship surrounded by those dratted featherfloaters just in the bay over there and was looking for survivors. It was only here she remembered the ship, the trip, the interplanetary training she had worked so hard at (so hip). She must have got her head knocked upon landing/crashing. That would explain the the lump-sized bump and some other stuff — the nudity obviously, but also the shower. It never rained on her island, yet she kept exclaiming to the rescuer, the “water’s on,” followed by, “I better go turn it off.” She went off to find a shower to turn off but never did. “How long had *that* been going on?” the rescuer asked, getting more alarmed by the minute. He had found a towel to offer her from a nearby camping spot but she refused it, saying she was still in the shower and that if she put clothes on that they would just get wet and she’d have to put them in the dryer and she didn’t have a dryer on this infernal island in the pocket of water on the surface of Mars. He kept scratching his head.

The rescuer left (the scene). She wasn’t sure when, or why. Maybe she killed him, she ruminated now, with senses returned. I *was* hungry. Would I do such a thing? Perhaps he mentioned the shower one too many times.

She remembers Carrcassonnee. Big C, as she called her, was on the island as well, but in spirit form. Mainly. An Olive head appeared once with a Big I within it, poking out a little bit, even, on one side. Disabled Astronaut AB pointed out the flaw. Carrcassonnee never returned in true form but she remained an advisor in the wind, the dust, the water, the sand. She could appear in a tree, a clump of grass, a stump. She came as a burning bush, saying that Astronaut AB had to make a choice and there was a Queen and a King to answer to over in a place called Corton, described by Big C as a similar island to this. AB logically asked if they were still Mars. Big C always affirmed that AB was on Mars, even though the rescuer had clearly denied this reality. “Yes, it was good I killed him,” she decided, a wry smile appearing on her lips.

“Spread them apart,” commanded one resident to another, separating Duck from Glen. “Wider, wider!” But even as far apart as they got they were still in the same county and that was the trick. The Queen and King retired happy.

“Don’t talk to her, dearest. She’ll come around eventually.”

Duke Duck

The fires were finally going out in the Toppsity area, but Gabby would not let brother Amos die in Vain. Never mind that he died in that field next to his house over there across the road. Images of Amos’ beloved Sacky Doll started popping up here and there around the town, starting with a trickle and ending with a flood thanks to Gabby’s friend Marilyn, who was helping out again the way she could. The good witches were working above and beyond the bad ones. White had displaced black at the top of the totem. Cat balance had been restored, or was being restored. Dogs go home — bad dog, bad dog! The Dead had become a Danger again.

Speaking of Cassandra City…

Postcard from Steptoe

steptoe03

Story Room consists of 3 individuals who don the geometric shapes sphere, tetrahedron and cube to mask their true identities. Sometimes lead singer Steptoe Butte is from Whitman County, Washington.

From the Uncyclopedia entry on Steptoe Butte:

“He was a striking-looking guy and he also bought weird records, which not everyone in the store did”, collaborator Pete StarBuck recalled. The two became friends and eventually decided to form a band.[1] StarBuck and Steptoe started writing music together;[2] at the time Steptoe also spent time in a local group named Raid.[3] The pair were soon joined by Bill Mills and Mike Berry and named themselves Murmur, a name Steptoe selected at random from the dictionary.[4]

“Hucka D., clarify for me something. Wouldn’t Steptoe be the blue figure here?”

Hucka D.:

Sometimes.

bb:

Is he the yellow figure as well?

Hucka D.:

No.

bb:

The red figure is the boss.

Hucka D.:

That’s Story Room.

bb:

I’m confused. I thought the name of the band was, or is, Story Room.

Hucka D.:

It is. (pause)

bb:

Where does Tom’s Petty High fit in[ here]?

Hucka D.:

Yellow. Lemon yellow.

bb:

Each… sorry.

Hucka D.:

Each rule over their portions of The Shining that come before or after. So Tom’s Petty High rules the psychiatrist-Danny scene. What have you renamed that recently?

bb:

The Story Room. Oh, wait. That’s — I know what you’re talking about now — that’s the Bear Pillow Scene, with all the little blips and sparkles, at least a handful that seem to mean something.

Hucka D.:

Sorry as well: actually Story Room rules that scene. So that’s why you have the word “strange” highlighted spoken by the doctor, and then the Duck just afterwards. The duck is both the lemon colored VW that protagonist [sic?] Jack drives to the Overlook Hotel to start the movie, and also Duck, WV, then. The presence of The Duck demonstrates the rule of Story Room, see.

bb:

Let’s see.

—–

Hucka D.:

Story Room had a lot of fun with that room.

bb:

Isn’t Story Room, though, the room in the exact center of the Shining with all the rainbow colors, Hucka? Rainbow man Hallorann lies in the middle. Soon to shine. [no answer]

strange? 04

(continued from)

This is the first frame of Chapter 4.

A yellow rubber duck is seen clearly behind the shower curtain Danny stands in front of at the sink. The curtain is drawn slightly away from the side wall at the bottom to emphasize the object, seemingly. Note also that Dopey the Dwarf is the last sticker character seen on the door as we track into the bathroom during the shot. This will become important in a moment.

shining1033a

We move to Chapter 5 now and Shot 61 again covered in “strange? 01, 02 and 03”, with screen captures of additional oddities or curiosities. The first is a spark illuminating the spot where the duck *was* in Chapter 4, the last time we saw this bathroom. The shower curtain hangs slightly *toward* the side wall at its bottom this time in contrast to before. We might presume the duck is obscured then, if it wasn’t clearly present in the *window* of Danny’s room. Did Danny move the duck? Or is this more magical Shining displacement, with no possible, terrestrial explanation?

Another reason this shower glint might be important is that it occurs in the first few frames of the shot, near its very beginning (12:10).

shining1210a

At 12:25, we have an oval patch appearing just to the left of the bear pillow on the bed. Notice that shapes seem to be formed in the pillow, perhaps most prominently what looks like a 4 toed foot across the top side, to the left of the 2 ears in the below capture. I’m recalling that Halloran would have his feet symmetrically propped up on pillows later on in the movie, when he’s watching TV in Florida and just before a shining moment where he appears to be in psychic contact with Danny.

shining1225a

Two more black dots form at 12:26 and 12:27 between Wendy and the bathroom, at about the same height above the top of the picture with the 3 animals. During this time, the doctor is approaching Danny to begin asking questions about the fainting incident he experienced earlier that day.

shining1226a

shining1227a

Then in what appears to be the last frame of shot 61, we have the *duck* highlighted by a small, dark discoloration. Recall that the place the duck *had* been, in the shower, is spotlighted at the very beginning of the same shot with a white sparkle thingie. Quite a bit of framing symmetry here, then, and another Alpha-Omega relationship. Planned? Dunno.

shining1240a

But there’s more (!) In the very next frame past shot 61, the first of 62, we have a mysterious white streak appearing above Danny’s head and the bear pillow, reminding us of the earlier white streak coming above the doctor’s head in shot 61. The white light only appears in this one frame, and doesn’t reappear in any other shot of Danny on the bear pillow in this movie chapter as far as I can tell.

shining1240b

In shot 63, we’re back looking at the dr. and Wendy. A brown spot occurs above the doctor’s head at 12:49…

shining1249b

… a redder spot near the center of Danny’s window at 12:53…

shining1253a

… and then, in shot 65, *another* vertical white streak above the psychiatrist at 13:07. Quite remarkable. It comes precisely as she’s saying the word “just” of the sentence, “Now Danny, can you remember what you were doing, *just* before you were brushing your teeth?” “Just” is the highest pitched word of her question.

shining1307a

When Wendy closes her eyes at 13:25, we again get the impression that her right eye is somehow larger than the left one, a popeye effect if I may be allowed again.

shining1325a

Wendy sneaks a quick glance at her doppleganger doll Goofy before leaving the room. I would assume Kubrick instructed her to do so. Something odd about her arms movements throughout these shots as well.

shining1406a

As other Shining researchers have pointed out, Dopey is gone from the door now as Wendy shuts it to end Chapter 5 of the movie. Compare with the first photo of this blog post. This disappearing act is mentioned in the “Room 237” documentary as well.
