Zero Club (away from bar (shapeshifter))

“I recall the first time I saw you, your (one good) eye. Staring out between Moon and Saturn standing on a piano with Sun while a man with a moth on his back climbed a blood red picture behind you, using your huge ponytail to get a boost.”

“It’s not *that* huge,” she retorted.

He continued. “They said she would never be invited again to one of these get-togethers since she brought so many friends and acquaintances with her. But 3-d Venus is alive and well, still with her many fans following her around like packs of wild dogs and cats.”

“In the flesh (!).” She indicated herself, her body. What else was different about her, he wondered.

He went on. “You lived in a house much like our user, front covered in wisteria as if in a protecting fence or wall. You designed the moat to surround a castle but then had second thoughts of leaving bucolic life; castle too large to properly fit on (your) island. Stymie, husband at the time — stymied still how he could have ever goofed up on a looker like you! –”

Cute tittering; cute covering of mouth.

“…was most often away exploring Viterbo, finding relics in the ruins. Then one particular relic ruined it for you; he had to move on, *you* had to move. And so on to another Rim Island, taking the house with you and adding another husband to replace the subtracted first: Jacob, 1/2 man 1/2 alien in this case, with 2 normal eyes below a united third. You?”

“Me,” she decided to say. “Pure bred. One single eye and no normal eyes atall, they said. But that was wrong. I just covered one up, the bad one. Clockwork now.” She indicated the spinning, geared wheel on her face, very fashionable, very retro future. She pointed to both eyes at once now. “Two, you see, just like you.”

“What’s under that tuft of hair?” he said, still doubting her and tempted to reach over and lift it to see for himself. Maybe then he would know if she was happier with Stymie or Jacob.

She changed as she revealed the truth.

Baker Bloch (and Baker Blinker) rescued Joey “The Venusian” Avatar from that Swamp Tree thingie over on Long Island and gave her a new assignment. Go back to Annaberg on the Jeogeot continent at the lip of famed Sunklands (yes, *that* Sunklands) and find Blue and Yellow and ask him some questions or just check in with him, see how he’s doing and what he’s been up to since we last saw him in part 1 of novel 30. We left him at the time of the rising sun, which, to us, the blog reader, mysteriously appeared as the word YELLOO with the YELL part being yellow and the OO part colored blue instead. The same image Marty saw, apparently for real this time (?), at another rooftop location in novel 26.

Now, in the present, Joey finds that he has something else blue and yellow to stare at from his caravan rooftop, still reading his Annaberg paper and catching up with the latest news. Ukraine, pheh. Bad juju over there…

… with a bunch of people involved for certain.

Perhaps that explains the no. 7 car running off the road and turning over just behind him here the other day, he thinks, maybe the day the war started.

The red and green balloon looms in the skies, visible to all residents at all times and reminding them of their loyalty to the 7 and the 6, not the 8 and the 5.

But the wise man with the blue eyes to match his overalls ponders the boys in the battlegrounds, growing up fast. But then growing young just as fast, 13 to 10 to 13 in an ever spinning wheel. Only 4 makes a complete and whole circle, he knows. The governments from all 4 corners of our world will have to understand that soon enough. For now, we remained perpetually trapped, as if in an Escher print.

In a related scenario, The Moon closely follows The Sun at this Annaberg carousel tucked in its nw corner, glad it’s no. 2 instead of no. 1. Best to hide in the shadows until this thing is over and not foolishly plummet down a falls and get directly involved. Right Joey?

And then, to end, Joey understands she must visit the Cave or the Cavern to catch up with the latest on Newt too. More soon, as I like to say.

key lost again

One of the oldest tricks in the book, she thought from her observing position. Lure ’em down to the beach with a piece of watermelon, then, BLAMO, instant terrain change in the shifting sand to trap them up to their motherlicking balls, she’d always heard the expression. Or at least knees in this case — enough to do the job.  She saw she could still dance the bill but it must be hard in the grainy resistance. Old habits die hard as they also say.

Time for another agent to take over from this obviously inept one. Another *Venusian*. Welcome back Joey Avatar. Digging the purple hair.

She dug her out and then sent her packing, even taking her badge. We’ll continue this obviously important story soon.

Gunpowder

Wind.

More wind. Cold.

—–

Jen reviewed how she got to this God forsaken place on the very western edge of Nautilus, almost disconnected from the continent. If only it weren’t for Vavra, who led her here. She use to blame it on someone named Jim, but then realized that was only a masculine projection of herself, a double created as a dark, oppositely sexed companion. He probably still exists somewhere. On the Mainland. Here, though? Nautilus but not Nautilus. Mainland but not Mainland. Different, an In-between World, ‘nother one. If only Vavra didn’t have that barely Linden water sailable boat, that Annoying ZZ Mat I think she called it, whatever that means. What-ever (Vavra-speak; I think she may also go by Marilyn).

She looked around even though she didn’t want to. Although certainly not the mountains of the Omega continent, it still was cold this time of year this far up the coast. Too close to Corsica to be temperate. None of the sim’s neighbors liked this place — didn’t consider it to be their “downtown” in any way. They too were isolated from the rest.

She needed to get out of this dress and into some real winter clothes but that would mean removing and rearranging the underneath pillows and she couldn’t make the effort, brrr. She hadn’t eaten in what felt like almost 3 hours.

Oh there were enough people here at any one time, it seemed. She’s counting 7 on her inworld screen besides herself. But where was Bert? Jim? No: Bert. Former police officer turned gigolo. Or pimp — she can’t recall; just as bad anyway, although she assumes the money is better with the latter since several of his ilk work for him instead of visa versa. She was the bookkeeper of the place. Kept tabs on the ledgers, made sure they balanced out each month. Numbers were her bag but figures were too. She oft times had to beat them off with a big black stick she kept handy for the matter. She thought of changing her name from Jen to Gen but didn’t want to lose full contact with Jim back on the Mainland, however imaginary he actually was. She could dream still, then. Her apartment? She wished it was the attic of the town’s Brownstone so she’d have a better view of the goings on of the place, but it was instead the 2nd. Vavra had the third, and always seemed to be bathed in dust-ridden light when she went up there to check on her or to socialize with her or to gather her up for one of those nights on the town. Like tonight. Big girls night out, but not too big. Vavra was on a weight plan. And herself? She started putting small pillows under her antiquated clothing to disguise her talent with figures as well as numbers. Some thought she had been knocked up, therefore, by Bud the grocery store manager Bert she was known to hang around with, but that was just because of the maths. They use to count the town residents one by one by one, as the green lights lit up on the map come din din time, as they called it. It was like a bell went off, a ding dong, and they came. Poor Mama had it right. The tiles were falling off the wall, red green yellow blue. If the camouflaged zebras start to show their true colors, then… trou-ble.

She wore strange makeup like an android: stars, rings like big red spots marked by a pin. She started out as a demo but she was more than that now. She was a real life girl. She decided at a certain point that she would pretend to create Jim instead of visa versa, and turn Bert into a gigolo with a corresponding loss of power. Because this was a woman’s world from now on. Adam, I’m Madam, nice to greet you. 2 + 2 can equal 5 if she wanted it to. Aloha can mean goodbye as well as hello. Inflammable can mean flammable, and so on. She was a mixed up boy-girl because her one head had turned into two with the schism. Mainland over there, [delete name] over here. The Wild West moniker had it right. Dodge, she decided, this is Dodge. Because she’s trying to, she *had* to. Jim had to remain real.

(to be continued?)

Head

5 til 3! she thought while looking out at the big Hooktip clock tower with her red and white umbrella peepers. I’ve got to get going!

I put on the garb of a white mage tonight, trying to act like I knew what I was doing. I was able to sit down on a diamond shaped plot of good ol’ actual Linden grass in a mainly artificial terrain constructed by the land owner of this little forest here, one Clare Nova. Remember her? Anyway I was smack dab on the Diagonal, at, let’s see, 36, 35. Close enough, as they say. One off of any of the two (or three) numbers is okay — difficult to tell any difference in the, um, energy, quote unquote. “It’s often not what’s right on The Diagonal,” I say to myself almost religiously, “it’s what you *see* from it.” Like that clock in the background Shelley Struthers up in the middle of the sim might be looking at at the same time. Actually, nope, in checking she’s put on that long Pepper shirt she likes now and is starting to brush her luxurious blonde hair (to her) in front of the vanity mirror. One stroke, she counts, two… three. Always 30 and she’s perfectly beautiful, almost as much as Ginger Granite down the lane. She can never get her bearings in this sim for some reason. What was its name?

30.

She splashes water on her face and prepares to face the world.

Today is the day she’s going to get up the nerve to speak to Tommy Tailgate, maybe goad him into asking her out. Goad? How about “guide”? She wants to get better at doing such things. Like Ginger again.

*Shelley*. That was the name of the lane. Like her!

There. Picture perfect.

previously

She walked right past the baby doll, not even tempted to pick it up for a cuddle. She was more grown up than infantile Jeffrie Phillips in that way.

She had to see for herself. The mother! Poor Katy Kidd. Another infant grown up too fast, thus the madness. She walked between the Big Boy legs, which probably wasn’t an error in this case. Just something she had to do to go inside.

She stops to ask a survivor if the beach was still straight ahead. The head nodded without sound. She wondered if this could even be All Orange in another guise. After all, a bloody dress was involved.

It was getting even creepier but Toddles kept moving forward toward the sea, the beach, the… explosion. A stick figure on a bike skirted her to the left without apology… a white doll boy in a tilted chair with slackened mouth also in that direction.  Straight ahead: another survivor. One of the lucky ones that was able to receive a mask.

“Is this the way to the beach? Darn bike!”

Another silent affirmation. She kept walking, rounding the old boathouse to the right to meet up with The Librarian, still perusing that Octopus book from the last photo-novel. The stench was becoming overpowering for the little girl. “Where is she?” Toddles demanded, tired of looking and wanting to get the hell out of this hell. She just had to see for herself. I still don’t think it was an error to enter, but we’ll see.

The Librarian didn’t stop reading but tilted his head to the left, indicating that direction. And there she was, face down in the sand. Or Toddles assumed it was her. She inched forward, the awful smell thicker and thicker.

She stopped at the tire. She could get no closer without fear of passing out. But she knew it was her now.

Katy Kidd, a little more grown up than we’ve seen her before. But definitely not reaching adulthood now. Toddles could go to Picturetown with a type of closure.

Return 01

“Starbuccaneer, my old nemesis, hehe. I’ll take 4 shots of expresso over ice in a venti cup.”

snapshot8261_006

He calls toward Karoz already seated at the far table. “You sure you won’t have anything?”

“Positive. Just going over my notes.”

snapshot8261_008

Baker Bloch turns back to the barista and lowers his voice a bit. “So how’ve you been Star? Long time no see.”

“2130,” came a robotic answer. “2130, 2130, 2130, 2130, 2130.” Starbuccaneer Barista’s eyes then turned pitch black for a moment.

snapshot8261_007b

“Hmmm,” says Baker. He calls back to Karoz. “Well, that’s probably for the best. Doesn’t look like they’re really open for business yet.” And I was really looking forward to that 4 shot latte, he then thinks to himself while watching Starbuccaneer’s eyes revert back to normal, but still staring blankly ahead. Possessed, he feels. “What do you think Blackie?” he queries his pet shoulder bird. “Possessed?”

snapshot8261_012

“P’ssessed,” the bird echoes back in a small tweet.

“Well Karoz, tell me all about your adventures in BoB. The whole honeymoon!”

snapshot8261_019

“Oh it was wonderful, Baker Bloch. And I apologize again for not inviting you to the wedding. You see, it was Baker Blinker’s idea. She said she just couldn’t wait and that Collagesity needed us wedded as soon as possible for protection.”

“What does that mean?”

“I tried a couple of times to get her to spill more details, but no go. Plus we were busy doing, ahem, other things.”

“Like biking.” Baker Bloch laughs, and Karoz smiles broadly.

“How’s Jorondip? You said you stayed in the garage two nights, wasn’t it?”

“Three, actually. Then we moved just up the hill to what appeared to be an abandoned cottage. Then we moved up to a much larger house above that. The one with the blue quantum mechanics book. Have I told you about my new theory concerning quantum computers?”

Baker shakes his head and Karoz tells him. LINK

“Fascinating. You could be right. But what does that say about Collagesity? On and off? Black and white? Jasper and Newton?”

“It means a door to reality,” Karoz states bluntly. “A way out of here.”

“Hmph.” Baker speaks to his bird again. “Whattaya say Blackie? A way to reality?”

“Real-ty,” the bird squeaked.

“Since when did you start talking to your shoulder pet, Baker Bloch?”

“I don’t know. Just started. What do you think Blackie? Good idea?” The bird didn’t answer this time.

“Well anyway, it was great, Baker Bloch. The second week we stayed — get this — it was a duplicate of my Bodega market apartment. And we could rezz anything we wanted to there within a 61 prim cushion! So that finished it off. I’ll show you the pictures of the whole thing later. Maybe invite the town to a slide show. Yeah, that would be a morale booster.”

“Is the town down in the dumps?” Baker Bloch asked.

“Well, you know the whole Carrcassonnee turning red and dull several times. We need the eye strong to protect us.”

“What about Wheeler?”

“Oh she had to go with us.”

“She did??” Baker Bloch stares at Karoz and imagines his eyes turning black. But they didn’t.

Are We Family?

snapshot8214_006

“Where’d your pupil go?”

snapshot8214_008

Wheeler:

Ah, there you are. Perch. How have you been Perch my old friend?

Carr (shaken):

I… I’m not Perch any more.

Wheeler:

I know. The whole assimilation thing. So you want to know about Jorondip, eh?

Carr.:

I didn’t say that.

Wheeler:

On and off. Black and white. I took over. I simply took over. And I took over the thing taken over. I’m just that powerful. Do you know who I am?

Carr.:

Um, you said you were me.

Wheeler:

You’re scared, huh? ‘Fraid I’ll take over *you*?

Carr. (meek; lying):

No.

Wheeler:

Well I can. I *will*. But not just yet. When Spider talks then that’s the End of Days. BoBylon realized. You understand me Perch?

Carr.:

I can’t reach those memories.

Wheeler:

I’ll have that eye and I’ll have you and everything else in this town.

Carr. (grasping):

Spongeberg. Spongeberg can stop you.

Wheeler:

No. Not even Spongeberg The Destroyer can stop me. I’m him as well!

Carr.:

No. Need… Asprind.

Wheeler (more of a whisper):

I’m even… this town. I’m Second Lyfe itself now. My Second Lyfe. *My* Second Lyfe.

(Carrcassonnee has no answer. “DEMON,” she thinks)
