I, baker b., have been creating PHOTO-NOVELS since late 2015. As of April 2026, these works number 49. Except for the first couple, they follow each other more or less directly with no time gap involved between the ending of one and the beginning of the next. All are composed of successive POSTS of the Sunklands blog rearranged back to front (instead of the blog default front to back chronological ordering) and collected into SECTIONS. Minus the first several again, each photo-novel contains 6 sections of 16-18 posts apiece and then sometimes a 7th, capping section of 3-7 more for a total of around 100.

The NOVEL part of the photo-novel name indicates an overall fictional story is involved, although, fair warning, it can get quite surreal and twisty-turny. 🙂  Actual word count for a photo-novel more closely resembles the standard novella: approx. 20,000. The PHOTO part of the name indicates that pictures are also an integral aspect of the storytelling process. The majority of these pictures are snapshots from the virtual game Second Life where most of the action takes place. A good chunk — a growing portion as of photo-novel 41 — are culled from other sources: screen captures from movies, TV shows, maps, and other virtual games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Grand Theft Auto V.

For the source blog posts, we have additional control elements of tags and categories. TAGS are usually the same as characters but can also denote things/concepts. CATEGORIES are usually reserved for locations. Tags and categories are not found in the photo-novels themselves.

Photo-novels *can* be read individually without regard to number. However, since they were created successively, the best way to read them is also successively. There is an overarching story that builds through each similarly structured incarnation. I’d recommend starting with photo-novel 1 and if the content for that one interests you, move on to photo-novel 2 and so on. But of course feel free to skip around if you wish.

Photo-novels from 21 forward are labelled “Sunklands” followed by the year created and then the general time of year (Winter, Early, Middle, Later, so on). Photo-novels 20 and before are called “Collagesity…” instead of “Sunklands…”
